Western Liguria is a narrow meeting point of sea and mountains. Around Sanremo, Ospedaletti, Imperia and Ventimiglia, the coast is backed almost immediately by green hills, old villages and roads that climb away from the Mediterranean.
Sea, hills and old towns
The appeal of the Riviera dei Fiori is not a single beach or resort. It is the way the landscape changes within a few kilometres: palms by the sea, medieval centres, olive groves, wooded valleys and small hill villages. A house above the coast can therefore offer both a Mediterranean view and quick access to inland Liguria.
For travellers who also want the French Riviera, the western end of Liguria makes cross-border day trips unusually easy.
Sanremo and the Riviera atmosphere
Sanremo is the natural urban centre of this part of the coast. Its medieval La Pigna quarter, later resort architecture, markets, restaurants and two marinas give it a more layered character than a simple beach town.
Nearby Ospedaletti is smaller and quieter, while Imperia and the coast towards Ventimiglia offer other balances between town life, beaches and hillside homes.
The flavour of Liguria
The old Villamania text is at its best when it describes food: focaccia, pesto, herbs, olive oil, fresh fish and the vegetable-filled dishes of the western Riviera. That connection between a rented home and everyday local life is one of the strongest reasons to stay here rather than treat Liguria as a place for a short hotel stop.
A villa or apartment gives the region time to unfold: the coast in the morning, a hill village for lunch and dinner back by the sea.
